All I Want for Christmas is the Abolition of Christmas

All I want for Christmas is the abolition of Christmas.

Not just this year, 5784, or so-called 2023, but especially this year.

There is no separating Christmas and its symbols from white Christian supremacy, Christo-fascism, and Christian Zionism, among other names for a logic that brutally reshaped the entire world since 1492.

It is a supremacy that’s so powerful, so hegemonic, it can appear invisible. It structures everything and yet makes itself seem like the air “we” breathe, or as if parts of it can be benign or used in solidarity for “good will and peace” among those it has dispossessed, displaced, murdered/genocided, and erased—from the land to their languages, calendars, rituals, cultures, and bodies. Even the dead find no good will or peace.

It is a supremacy that’s inseparable from the histories of colonialism and capitalism, antisemitism and Islamophobia, patriarchy and heteronormativity. And one that in total, has perhaps slaughtered billions more people than any other regime—Indigenous peoples, Black and Brown peoples, Muslims and Jews, queers and women, and the death count could go on.

Maybe there is a “Christmas” that could be redeemed—long after the abolition of Christian supremacy and its fascistic bloodlust, long after the abolition of “holiday season” and “Christ our savior” and Jesus as anything other than one of billions of mere mortals who were and are fodder for the death cult of a white Christian supremacist social order, long after our muscle memory has forgotten the murder sprees perpetrated by Christian supremacy this year in Gaza and years past against others, such as when we Jews had to hide on Xmas to avoid a similar fate.

We are far from that time, as the genocide against Palestinians right now is painfully underscoring.

What we have instead are and should be our millennia-old #RitualsOfResistance that Christian supremacy has tried so hard to steal and pervert and crush; our forms of solidarity beyond and without need of states and borders, priests or popes, wherever we are in the diaspora; and our rebel spirits that seek no savior.
