No matter how hard this earth gets — because it does get hard, and always will, as part of the human condition and, increasingly, our human folly — chosen family and chosen love, when patiently cultivated, supplies mutual tenderness in abundance. Such ground lets us peek through the mess of this society to see the many bits of sustenance, the tiny potentialities, that we’d otherwise miss.
Autumn sends this message: this is the only world we have, with its anticipation of cold winds ahead, with its infinite cornucopia of colors, beauty, and loss that make way for new seasons of growth; we’ve more need than ever to concentrate on making the most of it.
